The first term project of 2014/2015 for 4ème class euro A and 4ème class euro B included researching down syndrome and autism in order to build their awareness of these conditions. A visiting lecturer met 4ème class euro A to deliver expert knowledge on autism and a similar presentation was made to both classes on down syndrome by Dr. Nadra Al Borno: Assistant Professor- Special Education- American University in Dubai on January 12th, 2015. A potential art workshop with children who carry the condition is planned for later in the term.
The classes conducted polls in the school to establish what the general level of knowledge of autism and down syndrome was within the school population (students, teachers, administration, management). Respondents were informed on aspects of the conditions where necessary.
Information was also displayed on posters throughout the school.
In order to further reinforce awareness of down syndrome and autism, the classes organized a mufti day on November 20th, 2014. Everyone in the school was asked to donate 10 dirhams or more and to show solidarity with people who carry the conditions by wearing purple and blue, the respective colours of UAE Down Syndrome Association and Dubai Autism Centre.
These associations were equal beneficiaries of the total amount of AED 42, 234 donated on the day by both the primary and secondary schools at Academic City. Cheques were presented to both associations on January 12, 2015 in a ceremony at the secondary school. Attending from UAE Down Syndrome Association were: Dr. Nadra Al Borno: Assistant Professor- Special Education- American University in Dubai. Ms. Nawal Haj Nasser: Board Member, Head of Skills Development Division and Financial Manager, Mr Ahmad Shahin: Executive Manager, Mr. Mahmoud Atwan: Executive Secretary, Mr. Ashok Koyeda: Helper and two young boys, Abdullah and Mahmoud, who carry Down Syndrome. Dr. Nadra Al Borno confirmed that the monies raised would go towards the education of children with Down syndrome as well as integrating them more into society.
Dubai Autism Center was represented by Joelle Najm, Ms Rita and their official photographer.
Road safety awareness was another element of class 4ème euro 1B’s first term project. Students interviewed members of the school population and poll results were displayed in the school.
